Gilman Scholarship 2024-2025: Students with limited financial resources can take advantage of the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program offered by the U.S. Department of State to study or work abroad and acquire skills essential to our economic prosperity and national security. Candidates for the Gilman Program must either be in receipt of a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application or provide evidence that they will be in receipt of a Pell Grant during their internship or study abroad program. Since its inception in 2001, the program has been managed by the Institute of International Education.
Why Gilman International Scholarship Program 2024-2025?
By providing financial assistance to undergraduates who might not otherwise be able to participate, the Gilman Program expands the number of students who study and work abroad. The program’s goal is to encourage students to study and work abroad in a wide range of countries and regions. Additionally, the program encourages students to study languages, particularly those considered essential to national security. Veterans who have served in the armed forces are encouraged to apply, and veterans are given preference when all other factors are equal. The program has been successful in assisting students who have historically been underrepresented in education abroad, including but not limited to first-generation college students, ethnic minority students, students with disabilities, students attending HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) or other minority-serving institutions, students attending community colleges, students from rural areas, and students hailing from states in the United States that have a lower participation rate in study abroad. This success has been achieved through the program’s support of undergraduate students who have a high level of financial.

Mission of the Gilman Scholarship 2024-2025
The mission of Gilman Scholarship is to educate a generation of future American leaders with the international networks and skills necessary to advance U.S. economic prosperity and national security.
Grow the U.S. understudy populace that reviews and assistants abroad, helping more
youthful Americans to acquire the expert abilities, language capacities, and information on
the world required for effective vocations.
Expand the locations where students from the United States can study and work abroad to include developing nations and nations that are important to U.S. national security in order to foster relationships, increase mutual understanding, and represent American culture and values.
Eligible Criteria for Gilman Scholarship 2024-2025
The Benjamin A. Gilman Global Grant Program is a program of the U.S. Branch of State’s Department of Instructive and Social Issues. Please note the bold italicized updates to our current program eligibility. The following criteria must be met by an applicant for a Gilman Scholarship:
- A United States national or citizen
- An undergrad understudy on favorable terms at a licensed establishment of advanced education in the US (counting both two-year and four-year organizations).
- Having been awarded a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application or demonstrating that they will be receiving one during the duration of their internship or study abroad program.
- In the process of applying to or being accepted into a study abroad or internship program that awards credit. Evidence of program acknowledgment is expected before grant dispensing.
- Submitting an application for credit-bearing study abroad programs in a country or region that, according to the Travel Advisory System of the U.S. Department of State, has an overall Travel Advisory Level 1 or 2 or is on the list of approved Travel Advisory Level 3 countries or regions.
- However, the Travel Advisory may indicate certain locations within these countries or regions as either “Do not travel to” (Level 4) or “Reconsider travel to” (Level 3) locations; Students will not be permitted to travel to these particular places.

Essay writing guidelines
There are three articles expected as a feature of the Gilman Grant application: the Building Mutual Understanding Essay and the Follow-On Service Project Proposal Community Impact Essays, as well as the Statement of Purpose Essay. An additional essay is required for those applying for a Critical Need Language Award.
- Use a word processing program to write your essays first, and then upload them to your online application. For each of your essays, please use Times New Roman 12-point font with margins of one inch.
- Your essay should be written in the form of paragraphs, not as numbered responses to the application’s questions.
- There are a maximum of 7,000 characters (including spaces) in the Statement of Purpose Essay.
There are a maximum of 3,000 characters (including spaces) in the Building Mutual Understanding Essay. - The number of characters that can be included in the Follow-On Service Project Proposal is limited to 3,000.
- There is a character limit of 2,000 for the optional Critical Need Language Award essay, including spaces.
- Make sure your essays address the theme or prompt.
